Breaking Ground to End Hunger
A Landmark Moment: Breaking Ground on the Bridging Hunger Food Distribution Center
October 5, 2024 could not have been a more beautiful day for Bridging Hunger to take a significant step forward in the fight against food insecurity. Under a brilliant blue Oklahoma sky and the crisp autumn air, we gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Bridging Hunger Food Distribution Center. A large white tent stood tall against the striking backdrop, soon filled with hundreds of ministry partners and friends from across Oklahoma, all united by a shared commitment to serving those in need.
Honoring Leadership and Supporters
The event was emceed by Oklahoma State Representative Lonnie Sims, with support from Representative Jeff Boatman and Bridging Hunger board member, Pastor David Markham. These champions of Bridging Hunger have played a crucial role in advancing this project, ensuring that more families across Oklahoma will receive the resources they desperately need.
We were honored to welcome numerous local and state leaders, including Jenks Mayor Cory Box and several city officials. Representatives from the offices of U.S. Representative Kevin Hern and U.S. Senator James Lankford also joined us in celebrating this milestone. Governor Kevin Stitt issued a commendation, which was presented by CORE Executive Director Heather Turner, and Senator Lankford shared encouraging words about the lasting impact this center will have on Oklahoma families.
A Story of Hope and Transformation
One of the most powerful moments of the day came when a recipient of our services shared her personal journey. She spoke about how a simple bag of food from a Bridging Hunger ministry partner helped her move from a place of great need to stability. Her story served as a moving reminder of how food, hope, and prayer can change lives in profound ways.
A Major Step Forward
A significant highlight of the event was the announcement of a $1.2 million ARPA grant, presented by representatives from the Department of Human Services. With the land for the center already fully paid for, this grant gives us a strong foundation for the next phase of construction.
Our goal is to build debt-free, ensuring we faithfully steward our resources. The total expansion budget for the Bridging Hunger Food Distribution Center is $4.6 million including the land, building, refrigeration, equipment and furniture. Thanks to the ARPA grant and the generosity of donors who covered the cost of the land and donors already giving to this project, the remaining balance needed to complete this project is now $2.1million.
